The New Background, The Artist, and The Profile: ||DAN MATUTINA||

I have been so overcome with the capability of our homegrown visual artists that I felt it was only proper I introduce you to some of their work. That being said, expect exciting background changes on this blog, coupled with artists profiles throughout the rest of the year.

First up? An aptly Filipino themed piece launched for today’s Philippine Independence Day. Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to introduce to you, the artist, Dan Matutina.

What your parents named you:
Daniel Gabriel

What you would have opted to name yourself:
Dan. Hahaha. It’s shorter and easier to remember. I’ve always had problems with my full name especially when I’m issued checks for freelance projects. Clients always get it wrong.

Icon/Celebrity/Character/Historical Figure that best personifies your artistic style and/or would be an ideal subject/source of inspiration:
National Artist HR Ocampo.  I didn’t know anything about him in high school but I’ve always seen his artworks used as book covers. I liked them a lot. I learned more about him when I took up fine arts in college. Since then his works have always been an inspiration to me.

Common denominator in all of your work:
A healthy mix of handmade & digital, clean & dirty, old & modern aesthetics plus textures.

How to “court the muses” or “get into the zone”:
Coffee, a lot of sketching & doodling, constantly browsing websites that has or nothing to do about design & art.

You have one last piece to create. There are no limits. Describe it to us:
This is not necessarily an art piece, but more of a combo of art, design & tech. The internet has always been a repository of people’s feelings and  I’ve always wanted to try to document these feelings and present them in a creative way. There could be screens everywhere and people get to see what the rest of the world is feeling, or try to see the collective feelings of different people in the world at a particular time.

Complete the sentences:
“Creativity is — the solution to most problems.”
“The Filipino artist can — make the world a better place :p.”

Please talk to us about the artwork you created for the blog:

In creating the illustration I took into consideration the content of the blog. The blog is a very good source of positive vibes, news and inspiring content. The illustration is best explained by the haiku I asked my girlfriend to make:

built like a lighthouse,
signaled my people to rouse…
from their long, deep sleep

And now, we leave you with a peek into Dan’s portfolio:
