Perspective.

“Someone’s other half.”

If we were to look at everybody we encountered as “someone’s other half”, would it change, I wonder, the manner in which we treated them?

Would we be more accepting of their inconsistencies and annoying habits, thinking that somewhere in the world there was another human being that thought they were ironic and cute, or, would we let our guard down a little bit in social settings and actually listen past what they were saying and try to hear, instead, where they were coming from?

Would we be more sensitive to their bad days, their lash outs, their sullenness - and not take offense or strike judgment, but take the time to commiserate, though we may never be privy to the source of the sadness, fear, or pain, as say, someone’s other half might be?

Would we try a little harder to be more patient and nurturing, knowing that someone’s other half was investing all they knew into the person standing in front of you - that they were, in essence, someone’s work of art? Would we take the time to acknowledge and respect that?

Would we, in all our self-consumption, think fondly of our other halves and correlate that this feeling was what someone else was feeling for the guy that delivers your pizza, or the girl that’s handing out flyers in the street? That this feeling was what someone else was feeling for your boss, your neighbor, or the unattractive adolescent sitting across you on the train?

Would we?

Would it be different then?
